Mike Morton, like many throwers, got hooked on throwing axes after hitting his first bullseye at a group event in 2017. Angela Lansbury is also amusing as Nancy, an Edwardian tart employed by Gregory as an additional housemaid to keep an eye on Paula. ![]() Our concerns shift to whether Joseph will rescue the heroine-victim, with hints of romance between the inspector and Paula. Joseph Cotten is appealing as Inspector Brian Cameron, a Scotland Yard detective with a prior history with the aunt. The last quarter of the film turns into a more mundane Hollywood thriller. His gaslighting is despicable and infuriating, which is exactly the point. The mystery is not who, but how and why: what are Gregory’s motivations for doing all this? How exactly is he “gaslighting” Paula and how long will his torments prevail? You can understand why the film became the basis for the expression, since it is a sophisticated document of his cruel behaviours and their psychic effects on Paula. It’s important to note that the film isn’t concerned with the mystery of whether Gregory is actually manipulating Paula: that much is clear fairly early on, once they move into the townhouse and an old letter is discovered. He tells her there are no sounds and that the lights haven’t changed. Gregory does little things to make Paula think she is going crazy, such as constantly telling her that she is forgetful and loses things, and then secretly taking an object of hers and making it look like it has gone missing. Gaslight is a brilliant, disturbing portrait of psychological torment in the domestic sphere. As the story progresses, Paula hears footsteps from the supposedly empty attic, and she notices how the gaslight in her room turns down precisely when she hears those sounds, suggesting that gas is being used elsewhere in the household, even though the old housekeeper denies lighting any new lamps during the night. 9 Thornton Square, Paula remains traumatized from past events, and so Gregory suggests they board up all her aunt’s old opera stuff in the attic, which becomes the room of mystery of so many Gothic tales. The townhouse also points to another variation on the Gothic genre: Gregory is not aristocratic, but rather a social climber who mentions earlier experiences of poverty.Īlthough Cukor’s film opens up the setting somewhat, the Edwardian townhouse on a London square remains the primary location and source of atmosphere for the disturbing happenings. The townhouse was left to Paula, and her new husband is eager for them to repossess it. 9 Thornton Square, but when her aunt was murdered-and the crime was never solved, mind you-the young Paula was raised abroad, and trained to become an opera singer. You see, Paula grew up with her world-famous opera singer aunt at No. The main twist on the genre is that Gregory does not take Paula home to his own lavish, Gothic manor in the countryside, but instead to her old home in London. From early on the film indicates that Gregory possesses a mysterious past and hints at his possibly sinister intentions. In Italy, a young lady (Ingrid Bergman’s Paula Alquist) is seduced and courted by a charming older man (Charles Boyer’s Gregory Anton), the pianist for her opera lessons, who soon becomes her husband. Gaslight is a Gothic mystery, blending romance, terror, and a potent atmosphere cultivated in no small measure by the locale and its architecture. MGM’s 1944 production of Gaslight, directed by George Cukor, is based upon a 1938 play (by Patrick Hamilton) and a 1940 British film of the same name (directed by Thorold Dickinson). I’m pleased to say the film is far richer than I expected and worthy of renewed attention on its own merits. ![]() ![]() I was drawn to Gaslight not only to better understand the origins of the expression, but also because it features Ingrid Bergman, one of my favourite classical Hollywood actresses, in a performance that won her her first Best Actress Oscar. In this sense, liberals said Trump gaslit his supporters, and conservatives complain that the mainstream media gaslights citizens. Although use of the term has its origins in pop psychology and feminist criticism, more recently, the term is widely deployed by both the contemporary Left and Right, especially in the context of US politics, as an accusation of the psychological manipulation of a targeted populace. Over the years, but especially over the past six or seven, the term “gaslighting” has come to be used colloquially to describe a pattern of psychological manipulation and torment, in which someone makes someone else feel like they are going crazy, such as a cruel, controlling husband driving his wife to question her reality and thereby keep her vulnerable. Gaslight is an important film that’s probably less seen than you’d think given the popularity of the expression the title spawned. ![]() Matt Vasgersian, the play-by-play announcer for the Los Angeles Angels and studio host for MLB Network, will call the MLB Sunday Leadoff season opener from Philadelphia’s Citizen Bank Park (Sunday, April 23, 12:05 p.m. “We’re excited to have Brendan rejoin NBC Sports this summer and look forward to pairing him with local analysts each week in the booth as we continue to provide coverage with local flavor and in-depth knowledge of the competing teams,” said Sam Flood, NBC Sports Executive Producer. McDonough chuckled when recalling a recent conversation with Dan Berkery, a legend in Boston media circles from his time as general manager at Ch. “I’d like to be able to continue to do all of the stuff I’m currently doing and basically add this, but if any of them goes away, it might be the basketball,” he said. He wants to continue doing Red Sox games on the radio next season, though the schedule may have to lean toward later in the season since the Stanley Cup playoffs run into the summer. McDonough said he’ll continue to call high-profile college football games for ESPN and ABC, but his college basketball workload could be affected. I think it was NBC that had the ad campaign, ‘There’s nothing better than the Stanley Cup playoffs.’ I saw that and I was like, ‘Damn right.’ “ The puck and the players are moving way too fast. Even on the radio, the best radio guy can’t do that. McDonough said it is in some ways, but a lot of times the quality is dependent on the broadcasters’ vantage point. Hockey, because of its pace, is generally perceived as the toughest sport to call. “It was the first year that the NHL players could play in the Olympics and it was the first year that women’s hockey was on the Olympic menu. “Probably the highlight was the ’98 Olympics at Nagano when I was at CBS,” he said. But what’s his favorite moment broadcasting the sport so far in his career? McDonough said it’s a lifelong dream to call a Stanley Cup Final. ![]() Always striving to expand and improve Andy’s Frozen Custard, they have taken the brand to new heights, with locations throughout Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas, and Illinois, with plans for locations in Tennessee and Florida. And with just about every kilometre having an event or trope of some sort to boot, this actually ended up generating dozens, perhaps even hundreds of hours of play time. Matter of fact, its latest entry, Forza Horizon 5, actually wound up being just shy of 107 square kilometres in size, making it the series’ most ambitious and lifelike setting to date. And so, while it is a matter of preference, it is fair to say that, while Motorsport does offer a bread and butter racing simulation experience right off the bat, Horizon certainly does offer a few additional incentives-features that also happen to accommodate a larger player base, no less.Īs far as map sizes go, Forza Horizon is basically known for having some of the largest, most visually impressive open worlds in the racing division to date. These events, which roll under the banner of the ever-popular Horizon Festival, offer the freedom to choose which episodes you experience first, and as a result, don’t hold back on giving you the tools navigate the story at your own pace. And the Open World?įorza Horizon is different, in the fact that it crams an abundance of events into four shifting seasons over an open world playground. It’s very A to B, to be honest, and it goes above and beyond to be everything it set out to be - a racing game, nothing more, nothing less. More to the point - it offers a pre-made selection of chapters that you can work through at your own pace, without the added activities and questionably placed subplots. ![]() And while this does remove the sense of freedom ever so slightly, it does eliminate the feeling of confusion in the process. Sure enough, the one dividing factor here is the linearity Forza Motorsport sticks to it like ice on asphalt. Question is, which of these two formats work best, and which offers more freedom and replay value? As far as Horizon goes, events are presented in an open world format, which means races can only be accessed by travelling across the map and signing up on the spot. On one hand, Motorsport offers you a series of levels-episodes, if you like, that can be accessed directly from a central hub area between events. The thing that truly wedges a divide between Motorsport and Horizon is its progression system. Either way, one thing is clear: Forza Horizon is certainly giving Turn 10 Studios a run for its money right about now. As for which of the two will wind up having more entries than the other is anybody’s guess. Knowing this, and how popular the Horizon extension has become since making its debut over a decade ago, it’s safe to say that the two will be driving for that bottleneck slot come 2025. Not that this leaves Horizon shortchanged, however, what with Playground Games having five of its own in the open world saga since 2012. But more on that shortly.įorza Motorsport is, of course, the more seasoned of the two series, with a total of seven mainline instalments under its belt and an eighth on the horizon. Gameplay-wise, both offer an enormous collection of activities to partake in, with rivalries and seasonal events both making an appearance in each division. ![]() And while both subsidiaries offer an extensive range of vehicles, tracks, and game modes, the one thing that separates the two, really, is the format. Forza Motorsport - what is it, and how is it any different from Horizon? Well, to put it straight, Forza Motorsport is entirely circuit-based, whereas Horizon is considered to be more an open world sandbox sort of deal. ![]() To cut to the question: which of the two is better, Forza Motorsport or Forza Horizon? Let’s discuss it. However, for the sake of pointing you in the right direction and aiding your decision over which series to side with, we’ll go ahead and break it down into smaller sections. It’s safe to say that there’s a lot to unpack here, particularly when it comes to each of the two’s gameplay styles and overall progression system. Question is, which of the two Forza divisions is the better choice, in general - Motorsport, or Horizon? Needless to say that, regardless of the platform you choose to defend, both racing sagas offer tons of high-octane sprints, sleek vehicles, and custom liveries to boot. There’s a debate, even, that Forza is the all-round better version of Gran Turismo-an argument that has been volleying back and forth for the best part of a decade or so now. Turn 10 Studios and Playground Games’ Forza Motorsportand Forza Horizon are hands down some of Xbox’s most iconic racing series on the planet. ![]() Then confirm to uninstall the problematic driver.ģ.
